New Delhi; News Agency: The Central Government (Power Ministry) has made two major changes in the electricity tariff system on Friday. These changes related to improvements in time of day rate as well as smart metering provisions will certainly benefit consumers. Rate will be charged as per time. Instead of having the same rates for 24 hours, electricity rates will vary at different times of the day. (New Power Tariff)
Rates will be 10 to 20 percent lower than normal rates when the sun is in the sky (8 hours a day). Rates will be 10 to 20 percent higher during peak hours (usually the busiest time at night). The scheme will be applicable from April 2024 for commercial customers with demand of 10 kW and above. If customers schedule their work according to the time of cheap electricity, they will definitely benefit from this scheme. (New Power Tariff)
The scheme will be applicable for all consumers except agriculture from April 2025. A smart meter will have to be installed for that. Billing with the plan will start immediately thereafter. During peak hours (at night) electricity consumers may refrain from using more electricity. By managing electricity consumption for 8 hours a day, you can save up to 20 percent on the bill.
Electricity theft has been prevented due to the new meter
The feature of the new metering is that it will be possible to assess the bill by reading it from a distance. This will stop electricity theft.
