Kerala continues to face the full impact of the monsoon as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert in eight districts, warning of extremely heavy rainfall that could result in flash floods, landslides, and widespread disruptions. The districts under red alert are Idukki, Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Wayanad, Kozhikode, Kannur, and Kasaragod.

The IMD attributes the intensified rainfall to a cyclonic circulation over the central Indian region, which has amplified the southwest monsoon over Kerala and surrounding states. As a result, heavy rainfall is expected to persist for the next two to three days, putting vulnerable regions on high alert.

Several areas in Idukki and Wayanad have already reported landslides and road blockages. In Munnar, heavy mudslides have led to the closure of key roads, stranding tourists and locals. Emergency rescue operations are underway, with district authorities deploying earthmovers and rescue personnel to clear debris and assist the affected.

In Ernakulam and Kottayam, heavy rains have caused waterlogging in several urban zones, disrupting traffic and impacting business activity. The Kochi metro service continues to run, but authorities are monitoring track and overhead line conditions closely due to stormwater accumulation.

The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) has asked residents in high-risk areas to shift to temporary shelters. Over 50 relief camps have been opened across the eight districts to accommodate evacuees. The state government has also requested central assistance, with teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) deployed to assist local administrations.

Fishermen have been strongly advised to avoid venturing into the sea, as wind speeds are expected to reach up to 50 km/h, with turbulent waves along the coastline. Coastal districts are on alert for sea erosion and tidal flooding.

Residents are advised to stay tuned to official weather bulletins and avoid hilly areas during periods of intense rain. Authorities are particularly concerned about the stability of dams in central Kerala, with rainfall significantly increasing water inflow.

This latest wave of extreme weather underscores the ongoing climate vulnerabilities in Kerala, a state that has repeatedly witnessed monsoon-related disasters in recent years. State officials are urging citizens to take the red alert seriously and remain cautious.
