Donald Trump’s failed attempt to acquire Greenland in 2019 has once again come under scrutiny after the former president suggested NATO’s involvement in the discussions. In a revealing interview, Trump indicated that NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg had been a silent participant in shaping U.S. policy on Greenland.
“The strategic importance of Greenland is something Jens and I both recognized,” Trump explained. “The Arctic is vital for NATO, and Greenland could play a significant role in securing the region.”
While Stoltenberg has not confirmed any direct involvement, Trump’s comments suggest that NATO’s Arctic strategy may have helped influence the U.S. government’s approach to the territory. With tensions between NATO and Russia escalating in the region, Greenland’s location and potential resources could have made it a desirable asset for the alliance.
