The Bharatiya Janata Party is set to lose one of its prominent television faces after Shehzad Poonawalla once again submitted his resignation from the party.
Poonawalla announced on August 17, 2026, that he had asked BJP national president Nitin Nabin to accept his resignation from all party positions and primary membership. He cited pressing financial and personal circumstances and said he plans to move into the private sector.
The resignation comes after his earlier attempt to leave the party on July 30. According to reports, the BJP leadership had rejected that resignation and asked him to reconsider.
Poonawalla said the party’s initial response was personally meaningful to him. He expressed gratitude for the leadership’s confidence and acknowledged the opportunities he had received during his time in the organisation.
However, he has now decided to stand by his original decision.
The development is significant for the BJP because Poonawalla was among its most recognisable national spokespersons. He regularly represented the party in television debates, press conferences and online political discussions.
His role was particularly visible during major political controversies, when BJP spokespersons were expected to defend the government’s position and challenge opposition claims. Poonawalla became a familiar figure to television audiences through these appearances.
His political career also had an unusual trajectory. He began his political journey with the Congress and later became a prominent critic of its leadership. He eventually joined the BJP in late 2021.
Within the BJP, he was given important communication responsibilities. Reports have also noted that he was entrusted with leading the party’s Delhi IT and social media department in 2021.
His departure therefore creates a vacancy in the BJP’s national communication team. The party will need to rely on other spokespersons to fill the space created by his exit.
However, Poonawalla’s resignation is not being presented as an ideological break with the BJP. He has expressed gratitude toward Prime Minister Narendra Modi and senior party leaders and said he will continue supporting Modi and the BJP’s vision wherever possible.
This position could become an important part of the discussion surrounding his future. Unlike politicians who resign after openly criticising their party, Poonawalla has maintained a positive tone toward the BJP leadership.
He has also referred to recent events involving certain unnamed individuals. According to his statement, those events reinforced his decision to leave. But because he has not publicly identified the individuals or provided detailed information, it would be premature to draw conclusions about the nature of those events.
The financial aspect of his decision is also important. Poonawalla has said his circumstances require him to move into the private sector. This indicates that he wants to prioritise a different professional path at this stage.
His resignation comes at a time when reports of an expected BJP organisational revamp are also circulating. However, available reports do not establish that the reshuffle directly caused his decision.
For now, Poonawalla’s political journey is entering a new phase. He is leaving his formal role as a BJP spokesperson and seeking release from primary membership.
His future could involve private-sector work, public commentary or potentially another political role. But his immediate plan, according to his own statement, is to move into the private sector.
For the BJP, the exit means losing a familiar national spokesperson. For Poonawalla, it represents a carefully considered professional and personal transition.
