Union Home Minister Amit Shah could soon face Parliament over the controversial police action during the Delhi student protests, with the Centre offering to let him make a statement while asking Opposition parties to end disruptions in the House.
The development comes amid mounting pressure on the government to explain the events of July 20, when security forces intervened during a protest march towards Parliament. The demonstration was connected to demands surrounding education and accountability, and the police response quickly became a national political issue.
According to reports from the day, security forces used tear gas to disperse protesters after the march was stopped. The situation attracted further attention after videos emerged showing police personnel using batons.
Opposition leaders have argued that the force used against protesters was excessive. They have demanded that the Home Minister explain who took the decision to use such measures and whether senior authorities were aware of the police operation.
Rahul Gandhi has been among the strongest critics. In a letter to Amit Shah, he sought accountability over the alleged use of excessive force against students and protesters. He later called for action against those responsible and demanded a probe into the incident.
The government has rejected the suggestion that a minister directly instructed police to use force. The Centre has maintained that decisions concerning crowd control were taken by the administration and police authorities.
However, the political responsibility question remains because Delhi Police comes under the Union Home Ministry.
The latest government proposal is an attempt to address that question through Parliament. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju has said Amit Shah is ready to make a statement, but only if Opposition MPs allow proceedings to continue without disruption.
That condition has become the central point of disagreement.
The Opposition has been disrupting parliamentary proceedings to press its demands, arguing that the government has not adequately addressed the allegations surrounding the crackdown. The Centre, meanwhile, argues that Parliament cannot function if every issue results in continuous protests and adjournments.
The dispute has also been fuelled by social media claims. A video circulated online allegedly showed a Delhi Police officer saying that Amit Shah had ordered the protest to be ended at any cost. Fact-checkers found that the video was manipulated and that the actual police statement appealed to protesters to remain peaceful and cooperate with authorities.
That distinction is important because the question of who authorised the police action is at the heart of the political controversy.
An official statement from Amit Shah could potentially clarify the government’s position. He may be expected to explain the circumstances surrounding the deployment of security forces, the administration’s response and the government’s position on allegations of excessive force.
Opposition parties are likely to use the debate to raise broader questions about the right to protest, police accountability and the treatment of students.
The confrontation has also drawn the intervention of Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, who appealed to opposition parties to stop their protests and allow parliamentary business to resume.
For the Centre, Amit Shah’s proposed statement represents an opportunity to close one chapter of the controversy. For the Opposition, it is a chance to obtain answers directly from the minister responsible for the Union Home Ministry.
Whether the two sides can reach an understanding remains uncertain. But the government’s offer has changed the political equation: instead of refusing a discussion, the Centre is now offering a formal statement by the Home Minister, provided parliamentary proceedings are allowed to continue.
