The Jharkhand government is facing mounting pressure as student protests over alleged irregularities in recruitment examinations continue despite repeated rounds of negotiations.
The latest discussions between government representatives and student groups failed to resolve the dispute, leaving the administration and protesters still divided over the next course of action.
Students have been protesting in Ranchi over examinations conducted by the Jharkhand Public Service Commission and Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission. Their demands include cancellation of examinations allegedly affected by irregularities, investigations into suspected wrongdoing and comprehensive reforms in the recruitment process.
The state government has attempted to address the concerns by establishing a ministerial panel and engaging with different student organisations.
The talks have involved several groups. The JPSC-JSSC Reforms Manch met the government panel on Friday, while four rounds of discussions were reportedly held on Saturday with organisations including NSUI, Jharkhand Chhatra Morcha and Adivasi Chhatra Sangh.
The government has described the discussions as positive and said that it is considering the concerns raised by students.
However, the protesters have taken a different position. Their representatives have argued that discussions alone cannot end the agitation. They want the government to issue formal orders and take specific action on their demands.
The disagreement has become particularly significant because the protest has continued for more than two weeks.
A prominent student leader, Devendra Nath Mahto, has been on an indefinite hunger strike at Jaipal Singh Stadium. His health reportedly worsened on Sunday, with doctors recording a blood glucose level of 53.
The health concerns have added urgency to the negotiations and increased public attention on the protest.
The students’ demands cover both immediate action and long-term reforms.
Jharkhand Chhatra Morcha has demanded cancellation of the 14th JPSC Civil Services Examination. NSUI has called for a CID investigation into examinations facing allegations and proposed the establishment of a state testing agency. The Adivasi Chhatra Sangh has demanded greater recognition of tribal and regional languages in recruitment examinations.
The government has said it is committed to comprehensive reforms. An official email address has also been created to collect suggestions from aspirants and other stakeholders regarding changes to the recruitment examination process.
Meanwhile, the controversy has expanded beyond student-government negotiations.
Political parties and leaders have entered the debate, with Union Minister Annapurna Devi demanding the resignation of Chief Minister Hemant Soren. The political confrontation adds another layer to an already sensitive issue.
Law enforcement agencies are also continuing their investigation into alleged examination irregularities. According to reports, 19 people have been arrested in connection with the JPSC case. Former JPSC chairperson L Khiangte has also been questioned multiple times since July 28.
The students have announced plans for an Assembly march if their demands are not satisfactorily addressed. Other student organisations have also announced their own programmes.
The continuing protest highlights the wider importance of recruitment examinations in a state where government jobs are highly sought after. For candidates, examination irregularities can mean losing months or years of preparation and uncertainty over their career prospects.
The government’s challenge is therefore not simply to end a street protest. It must also restore confidence in the recruitment process.
The second round of talks has failed to achieve that objective. Unless both sides find common ground on specific demands, the Jharkhand student agitation is likely to remain a major issue in the state’s political and administrative landscape.
