Typhoon Dujuan caused widespread disruption in Japan on Monday as heavy rain and powerful winds affected the Pacific coast and the Kanto region.
More than 1.9 million people were urged to evacuate as local authorities responded to the threat of flooding, landslides and strong winds.
The storm approached eastern Japan after producing heavy rainfall across the Izu Islands and Pacific coastal areas. The Japan Meteorological Agency warned that rainfall could intensify as Dujuan moved closer to the Kanto region.
Izu Oshima experienced exceptionally heavy rainfall, with more than 600 millimeters recorded in a 24-hour period. Chiba Prefecture also reported rainfall totals above 300 millimeters in some areas.
The rainfall created concern about landslides because the ground became increasingly saturated. In areas with steep terrain, prolonged rainfall can weaken soil and increase the possibility of sudden slope failures.
Authorities issued evacuation information for communities considered vulnerable. Some residents were told to move to safer areas or higher floors of buildings.
The weather also affected transport across eastern Japan.
Hundreds of flights were cancelled by Japan’s two major airlines. Japan Airlines cancelled around 120 domestic flights and All Nippon Airways cancelled approximately 140. Railway services were also suspended or reduced in parts of Chiba, Ibaraki and western Tokyo.
The disruption came during Japan’s Silver Week holiday period, making travel more complicated for residents and tourists.
Events were also affected. The Tokyo Game Show cancelled its Monday programme, while organisers of the Asian Games postponed an equestrian eventing competition because of the storm.
The storm also influenced government activity. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi delayed her planned departure for New York to attend the United Nations General Assembly.
Meteorological officials warned that the greatest threat could come from concentrated rainfall. Linear rain bands can develop in connection with typhoons and remain over a particular area for several hours.
Such rainfall can cause flash floods, rapidly rising rivers and additional landslides.
Residents were warned to avoid low-lying areas and underground facilities during periods of severe rainfall. Authorities also urged people not to travel through flooded roads because even shallow-looking water can conceal dangerous conditions or prevent vehicles from moving.
Japan’s disaster-warning system provides different levels of alerts depending on the severity of the threat. Officials encouraged residents to understand the warning issued for their particular area and follow municipal evacuation instructions.
The storm had already caused at least one reported death in Miyazaki Prefecture, while another person sustained minor injuries, according to information cited by The Japan Times.
Emergency authorities continued tracking the typhoon’s location, pressure, wind speeds and rainfall.
As the system moved northeast, officials remained concerned about the possibility of additional flooding and landslides, particularly in areas where the ground had already received large quantities of rain.
The storm also highlighted the importance of preparation. Residents were advised to secure objects around homes, prepare essential supplies and keep mobile phones charged so they could receive emergency information.
Authorities continued to stress that evacuation should take place before dangerous conditions make movement difficult.
Typhoon Dujuan therefore affected much more than the immediate areas directly exposed to its strongest winds. Its effects spread across transportation, tourism, public events and everyday life.
With rain continuing in several regions, authorities maintained a high level of vigilance and encouraged residents to rely on official weather and evacuation information.
