The Centre conducted a nationwide test of its Disaster Information Alert System, causing millions of mobile phones across India to emit emergency beeps and warning notifications simultaneously. The exercise marked one of the country’s largest public alert system trials aimed at improving disaster preparedness and emergency communication.
The alerts, delivered through cell broadcast technology, appeared on smartphones regardless of the user’s mobile application settings. The notification clearly stated that it was only a test message issued by government authorities and did not require immediate action. However, the sudden alarms left many users surprised and curious.
According to officials, the system has been developed to ensure rapid dissemination of emergency information during situations such as cyclones, earthquakes, floods, tsunamis, landslides, and industrial accidents. The technology allows authorities to send alerts directly to mobile devices within seconds, even in areas experiencing network congestion.
The National Disaster Management Authority and the Department of Telecommunications coordinated the exercise with telecom operators nationwide. Engineers monitored the performance of the system to evaluate delivery speed, regional coverage, and compatibility with different smartphone models.
Authorities said India’s disaster response capabilities have improved significantly over the past decade, especially in cyclone forecasting and evacuation planning. However, officials acknowledged that communication gaps during emergencies continue to pose major challenges, particularly in remote and densely populated regions.
