Captain Smit Machchhar’s name has become widely known after a dramatic cockpit emergency aboard a Flydubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv.

The Indian pilot was seriously injured during the incident but reportedly played a crucial role in enabling passengers and crew members to intervene.

Machchhar was the captain of Flight FZ1073, which was carrying 174 people, including 27 children. The aircraft was travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv when a confrontation reportedly broke out in the cockpit.

Reports say the co-pilot attacked Machchhar and allegedly attempted to take control of the aircraft.

The plane subsequently entered a steep descent. The situation became increasingly dangerous as the aircraft lost thousands of feet.

Despite being seriously injured, Machchhar reportedly managed to open the cockpit door. Passengers then entered the flight deck and helped overpower the alleged attacker.

The aircraft was eventually diverted to Tabuk in Saudi Arabia and landed safely.

The incident brought attention not only to Machchhar’s actions during the emergency but also to his long aviation career.

According to reports, Machchhar entered commercial aviation in the early 2010s. He joined SpiceJet in 2011 and remained with the airline for approximately 11 years. During his career there, he reportedly served as a Senior Commander and Line Training Captain.

As a Line Training Captain, he was involved in training and mentoring pilots, according to his professional profile. He later joined Flydubai in June 2022 as a direct-entry captain.

His professional profile lists thousands of hours of flying experience and experience on Boeing 737 aircraft.

That experience became critical when the flight encountered an extraordinary emergency.

Following the safe landing in Saudi Arabia, Machchhar received medical treatment. The Indian government later confirmed that he had been transferred to Abu Dhabi for continued care.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi personally praised him and spoke to his family. Modi described Machchhar as a hero and said his actions had helped save hundreds of lives.

The Prime Minister subsequently referred to the incident as preventing another “9/11-like” attack. The statement was made while addressing the centenary celebrations of the Union Public Service Commission.

The comparison has become a major part of international coverage of the incident, although the underlying circumstances are still being investigated.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also praised Machchhar, calling attention to his actions during the cockpit emergency.

Passengers aboard the aircraft also reportedly contributed to resolving the crisis. Some entered the cockpit, helped restrain the alleged attacker and assisted the injured captain.

A passenger with medical training reportedly helped treat Machchhar during the flight.

The incident has raised broader questions about cockpit security and procedures for handling violent incidents involving flight crew.

Authorities will now examine what triggered the confrontation and how the aircraft’s systems and crew responded.

For Machchhar, however, the immediate priority remains medical recovery.

His career, which began more than a decade ago and included years of commercial flying and pilot training, has now placed him at the centre of one of the most closely watched aviation incidents of the year.
